This post discusses the Verge, one of Ethereum's post-Merge development roadmaps, which aims to upgrade the state Merkle tree to a Verkle tree, allowing builders to attach witnesses to their blocks, removing the need for full nodes to store a local copy of the state in order to to verify blocks ('statelessness').
