By statute, tax-free exchanges in 2018 and later are only for real property, not for crypto. How about for 2017 and prior years? It just isn’t clear. But it turns out there are some good arguments for allowing tax-free exchanges of crypto in 2016 and 2017. The IRS might even agree.
